3 Frameworks for Designing Onboarding Experiences
UX STRAT WORKSHOP SEPTEMBER 15, 2016
By Kylie Tuosto & Stephen Gay
This year, we took our workshop to UX Strat in Providence Rhode Island where we got the opportunity to share our journey with talented designers, strategists, and leaders from across the country.
WHAT WE LEARNED
We started our workshop by saying "No matter what you call it -- user on-boarding, first-time use, the out-of-box experience...." but it turns out that what we call it and how we frame it actually matters a lot. The UX Strat-ers have struggled with communicating the true power and impact first use can have if it's thought of more broadly as a learning journey. Jill even coined the new term "Through-boarding" as a way of emphasizing the fact that first use truly is a journey. Others even suggested that it's really more of a design approach that champions simplicity for the novice above all else.
We also learned that lots of designers are struggling with creating personalized onboarding experiences for different types of users or personas. I'm excited that we're experimenting with this topic now and will hopefully have great learnings to share for the next workshop!
